I was too tired today as I had to do a lot of cleaning jobs. Really wanted something to boost me up. Thought of making bean burger with Kidney beans but they were not soaked – bad planning..Suddenly I thought, why not make it with moong dal (whole green gram)? Excited by this thought, I started searching for recipes but most of them used split yellow gram. I did not want that. I was keen in trying out with green gram. I had home made burger bun with me (dairy free too) and I quickly boiled green gram. Thought of using Oats for binding along with little olive oil. Also decided to omit breadcrumbs which most recipes call for..The texture was great and my daughter also loved it..Yet to get an opinion from my husband as he is still not back from office. I am sure I would be making this often as these are healthy and easy to make. It took me less than 30 minutes to make the patties. I got 7 small patties with this quantity.
Ingredients:
Boiled green gram | 2 cups |
Oats | 1.5 cups |
Chopped onion | 1/2 cup |
Olive oil | 1 tbsp + for shallow frying |
Red chilli powder | 2 tsp |
Coriander powder | 1 tsp |
Garam Masala | 1 tsp optional |
lime juice | 1 tbsp |
Salt | to taste |
Method:
1. Roast the Oats and allow to cool. Powder it coarsely.
2. Mix the boiled green gram with all the other ingredients including 1 tbsp of olive oil. All of the ingredients will bind nicely.
3. In a pan, add a little oil (I used olive oil, you can use any oil with neutral taste). Shape the mixture into small patties and shallow fry them in small batches. Cook on both sides. This will not take much time as the moong bean is already boiled.
4. Serve with the burger bun, few leaves of lettuce, tomato – onion slices and a bit of ketchup..
A healthier alternative to any store bought burger and hence could be included in kids’ lunch boxes too.
Try this home made, healthy burger and get rid of your tiredness as I did!!
