Today’s dish is a very special one. Colocasia stem is called Thaalu in Malayalam. When I was a child, this used to be prepared at home every time my great grandmother visited us. She was very fond of this recipe. This time when we went to India, my mom’s friend gave some Thaalu and I carried it with me to prepare this dish. It came out well though not as tasty as my mother cooks it..
Ingredients:
Chopped colocasia stem | 2 – 3 cups |
Urad Dal | 1 tsp |
Coconut oil | 2 tsp |
Mustard seeds | 1 tsp |
Red chilli | 1 or 2 |
Tamarind | small lemon sized squeezed in water |
Curry leaves | as needed |
Salt | as needed |
Method:
1. Wash the chopped colocasia stem nicely. Pour oil on to a heated pan.
2. Once the oil is hot, add red chilli and urad dal.
3. Allow the dal to brown a bit and then add the mustard seeds and curry leaves.
4. When the mustard seeds splutter, add the colocasia stem and salt. Saute them for about 5 – 10 minutes and then add tamarind water.
5. Let the raw smell of the tamarind go away and the curry become a bit dry.
6. Switch off the flame and serve hot with rice.
